Background of the Study

Organizational learning refers to the process by which organizations acquire, share, and apply knowledge to improve performance and foster innovation (Argyris & Schön, 2024). In the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), organizational learning is especially crucial for sustaining competitiveness in rapidly changing markets. SMEs in Katsina State are confronted with numerous challenges, including market volatility, limited resources, and insufficient access to technology. As such, effective organizational learning can provide SMEs with the tools needed to adapt, innovate, and improve operational efficiency.

However, while many SMEs in the region understand the importance of learning, the practical application of organizational learning strategies remains inconsistent, often due to limited resources or inadequate structures for knowledge management. This study critically analyzes how organizational learning contributes to business success among SMEs in Katsina State, exploring the mechanisms through which learning impacts performance and growth.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of organizational learning, SMEs in Katsina State often struggle to effectively integrate it into their business strategies. The lack of formalized learning processes, coupled with resource constraints, has led to stagnation and reduced ability to adapt to market changes. This study seeks to address the gap in understanding how organizational learning influences business success, with a focus on SMEs in the region (Bala & Jibrin, 2023).

  3. What barriers hinder effective organizational learning among SMEs in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Organizational learning strategies positively contribute to business success among SMEs in Katsina State.
  2. SMEs in Katsina State face significant barriers to implementing organizational learning practices.
  3. The application of knowledge management systems significantly enhances organizational learning and business success.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on SMEs in Katsina State that are actively engaged in business operations and have been in business for at least three years. Limitations include the reluctance of firms to share internal knowledge management practices and resource constraints for implementing learning strategies.
